Development of the Artistic Preferences Scales

  August 2017

The Artistic Preferences Scales were developed to measure individual differences in what people like about visual art.

525 images were taken from the Wikimedia Commons and cropped to be 250x325 pixels. Over the course of three years (2014-2017) a 75 item versions of the test made available on this website in 75 different versions (each version containing 15 standard items and 60 randomly generated for that form items) and 66,170 persons took this test accross its various versions. Analysis of all this data showed extremely strong support for three factors (with a few more inconsistent and trivial factors). The APS1.2 takes the best items that measure each factor and 6 validity items.
